« Uncoiling I » was originally written in September 2002, elaborating on drafts dating back to September 2000, and was first published in 2004.

At the time the music first came about, it was as if my activities were conspiring to remind me of the composition. I had just moved into a new house, and I had planted about half a dozen small trees which needed to be watered on a daily basis. So there was much coiling and uncoiling of the garden hose going on. Also, I recall having to untwist an impressive length of black plastic tube which had been abandoned on the roof, previously put there to serve as part of a swimming pool heater apparatus.

But the title of this miniature fugue for quartet rather comes from the notion of Kundalini energy, one of my subjects of interest at the time. From Wikipedia :

(...) literally means coiled. In yoga, a "corporeal energy" - an unconscious, instinctive or libidinal force or Shakti, lies coiled at the base of the spine. It is envisioned either as a goddess or else as a sleeping serpent, hence a number of English renderings of the term such as 'serpent power'.

The first clip is an edited MIDI version that was completed in August 2007, mainly to incorporate vibraphone into the piece, and also features classical guitar, fretless bass and piano.

The second clip is the original 2004 draft version.

As the title suggests, the piece is the first of a series. At least two other parts are in the works, the second growing into a piece of metallic, heavy prog thing, while the third will be more in an hybrid electro prog rock style, along the lines of « Into The Ashram » for instance.

There are no plans to include vocal melodies on any of the three sections for now, but here is the poetry which the music has inspired.

apparently finite
yet in eternity
there is no part of you
that is not part of me

our worlds colliding
it's not you i'm seeing
but how you're reflecting
in my understanding

as your view touches mine
asking me to decide
between growth and decline
this is no time to hide

though my blood is boiling
i am not unknowing
it's only the prompting
of the future knocking

forcing me into place
the unseen architect
completing the puzzle
so splendidly perfect

no venom poisoning
but love in the making
the serpent is rising
its power uncoiling

He who binds himself to a joy
Does the winged life destroy
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in eternity's sunrise

This piece is a singularity as far as the poligrafic repertoire is concerned. I didn't aim for innovation or cleverness as I often do because I felt that the best way to let the message through was to keep the music simple. Thus, the composition is about four minutes long and stays within a fairly standard structure.

The song starts in a negative, finger-pointing, minor mode, and progressively evolves to a positive, hope-fostering mood. It ends on a reprise of the instrumental section, harmonized to an uplifting variation of the original minor chord progression.

The lyrics have been slightly reworked since the original publication. They have been stepped up from the « almost done yet still tentative » status to the « nearly complete yet there is still time to find even better » status.

I remember quite well
Seems not so long ago
You had to face a choice
At last you had your chance to grow

You said you would I can recall
Your mind made up, you couldn't fall
But when came time to break the news
Who could deny you were confused ?

Heartbreak and time alone
Letting the dust settle
Anxiety built up
Pressure that you could not handle

Spitting your flames, playing your games
Never taking part of the blames
And after all this much abuse
Who could deny there was no use — in going on ?

Because you didn’t believe in us
You're not part of the team — oh believe that
Because you didn't hear faith but fear
You’re not part of the dream

We have wings, when we refuse to cry
We have wings, when we refuse to lie
We have wings, none of us can deny
We have wings, why be afraid to fly ?

Believe, you have to believe in us
Play your part in the team — oh believe
Believe, you have to hear faith, don't fear
Be your part of the dream

We have wings, when we refuse to die
We have wings, when we stand up and try
Trust your wings, and stop to ask why
You have wings — just jump up and fly !

Poligraf’s first album will be entitled « Samsara » in reference to the cycle of reincarnation in Buddhist culture.

Samsara is a Sanskrit and Pali term derived from to « flow together, » « to go or pass through states, » « to wander, » and which translates as « continuous movement » or « continuous flowing. »

In Buddhism, it refers to the concept of a cycle of birth and consequent decay and death, in which all beings in the universe participate and which can only be escaped through enlightenment. Samsara is traditionally associated with suffering and is generally considered the antithesis of nirvana.

An alternative interpretation proposes that Samsara is rather the process one must undergo in order to achieve enlightenment. Proponents of this view believe that individuals create their own worlds on their way to enlightenment. When their current world is starting to decay, they will create a new world and move into it.

As an illustration of this principle, one can consider the many « lives » individuals go through over the course of their physical lives, as they evolve through schools, jobs, relationships, activities, and so forth.

In this perspective, the many ups and downs, joys and pains, successes and failures, achievements and setbacks one experiences on their journey can be seen as metaphors for constant spiritual growth.

In accordance with the latter interpretation, the album presents a collection of compositions that depict the journey of an individual facing a series of challenges through which they will experience various forms of transcendence, on their way to a better version of themselves.

·

In its early years, Poligraf went through numerous changes as non-core members would often come and go for whatever reason. By the time of the dissolution of its original core in February 2003, five years after its inception, the band had already existed in over ten different incarnations. And every time a member joined us or left, a new phase of adaptation would begin as not only did each of us have to adjust to the new group dynamics, but the music would often also change. So, as you can imagine, the band’s general trajectory was pretty much similar to the white line depicted on the album’s artwork, all in ups and downs, although always progressing.

Thus, the album title seems very appropriate to describe this first effort given a band’s history characterized by its many cycles of reincarnations, and which in itself can be regarded as an instance of samsara.
Exposition (Polygraph part 1 - revisited)tag:www.worldviewzmedia.net,2010-10-15:2098065:BlogPost:411032010-10-15T23:02:01.000ZChristopher Stewarthttp://www.worldviewzmedia.net/profile/ChristopherStewart

« Polygraph » is intended as a portrait of human relationships turning to the sour, hinting at the necessity of constant genuineness. The composition lasts a little over 10 minutes and is composed of the following four sections :

Exposition

Confrontation

Consideration

Vindication

I have a particular fondness for that piece of music. One fine evening many years ago, the TV was on to Robert Lepage’s movie « Le Polygraphe » as I stumbled upon the main motif while trying some tapping patterns on my classical guitar. When time came to sequence the motif, the music reminded me of the movie and so I named the file « Polygraph. » The band was still looking for its name at the time, and I felt compelled to add this peculiar word to a growing list of potential names that were submitted weekly to the boys at rehearsals. An awful lot of names were suggested during that period, but « polygraph » was the first to which nobody voiced any objection, so we gratefully jumped on it, and the rest is history...

The introductory movement of the suite is entitled « Exposition » and aims to evoke a heated yet still somewhat civilized exchange, not reaching the point where the relationship degrades to lower and better left undescribed levels of disrespect.

The Discipline-era King Crimson influence is undeniable here, and to my ear the second variation sounds like something from Steve Reich’s « Drumming. »

The lyrics to this first part are now, if not complete, at least pretty much done, as I have a feeling that I will revisit and tweak some of them before they are granted the seal of definitiveness.

One says dark
One says light
Who's telling lies ?
Who's feeding the fight ?
Truth is on their side
Or so they proclaim
Both have their pride
And when they collide
It's no more a game

One says black
One says white
Their exchanges
Are far from forthright
Trying to corner
And manipulate
Shame and dishonor
Demean the other
Or they will checkmate

One says day
One says night
Hurtful replies
Are no oversight
Clever and nasty
Words don't betray spite
Yet they carry
All their enmity
Both can feel the bite

The closing movement of « Juggernaut » is entitled, simply, « Epilogue. »

Inspired by ELP's « Abaddon's Bolero » from their « Trilogy » album, this instrumental piece is based on a single theme that is played in harmony by all the instrumentalists over various but similar chord progressions.

The section starts with bass line and triangle, soon followed by the main theme on guitar, and then the various instruments progressively add their voice to the ensemble. The music crescendoes to a climax, and then slowly recedes to the point where only the melody remains, played on trumpet.

The challenge here was to stack as many voices as possible while making sure that the whole could be played by the quintet, knowing that three of its members can double on keyboards, the bassist also plays bass pedals, and the drummer can move from the sticks to the trumpet.

« Juggernaut » is a suite which clocks in at a little under 18 minutes and is made up of the following six parts : « Prologue, » « Heedlessness, » « Procession, » « Steamroller, » « Resilience, » and « Epilogue. »

The composition has originally been inspired by a most painful experience which involved a rented house shared by six young and not-so-young adults, unannounced extensive renovations, and frictions and miscommunications of all sorts. It's intended to illustrate the hamartia/metanoia principle :

Missing the point. Yes, hamartia which meant missing the point, missing the mark. Now that got translated as sin. And repentance was metanoia, meaning a transformation of the mind, and got translated as pain, right? Penitence, repentance. The point is that repentance is merely to understand that you missed the mark, you see? (laughter) Therefore evil is missing the mark, basically. It is confusion, right? Its ultimate source is the kind of confusion I described about thought. - David Bohm
Introversion & Intervention (The Chrome Lake parts 1 & 2)tag:www.worldviewzmedia.net,2010-10-11:2098065:BlogPost:409252010-10-11T20:05:31.000ZChristopher Stewarthttp://www.worldviewzmedia.net/profile/ChristopherStewart

« The Chrome Lake » is the core middle part of the « Entering The Stream » trilogy. Lasting a little over 12 minutes, the composition depicts one episode of intense soul-searching, and comprises seven sections identified as follows :

Introversion

Intervention

Introspection I

Introspectrumental I

Introspection II

Introspectrumental II

Integration

The suite begins with two instrumental sections that will probably be two of the hardest bits of Poligrafic music to play live, as they are very demanding in terms of accuracy, and also in endurance as far as the drummer and keyboardist are concerned. Surely, the synth solo in « Introversion » will have to be simplified if I’m playing it. Speaking of solos, there's also a guitar solo that's missing (at 1:42), but I'm confident Miguel will come up with something interesting.

« Introversion » includes one of my favorite passages of the entire poligrafic repertoire, « A Break In The Clouds, » which begins at 2:12 and features a melody played on clarinet supported by a reprise of the introduction's theme executed on the piano.

« Intervention » is the short movement near the end of the clip wherein saxophone and clarinet dialogue over a repetitive piano motif.

To accompany the music and its odd meters, here's a trisyllabic pentametric poetic portrait of the introvert :

it's not that i have it all my way
safe to say i do not
it's not that i keep people at bay
or let relations rot
it's not that i don't have much to say
i just don't say a lot

i do not smile that much why would i
i see few reasons to
half the things reflecting in my eye
disgust me from the view
half the world down playing one big lie
do not expect me to

don't suppose that my mind's in a fuzz
if i'm out of fashion
don't mean me disrespect just because
i don't crave attention
don't think it doesn't hurt when it does
i'm no automaton

i don't mix with the crowd i'm no nerd
i just do not belong
it's not that i'm too proud for the herd
we just don't get along
my attempts to connect backfired
now i sing my own song

when comes my chance to meet i suspect
i do not open up
when comes my chance to thrive i deflect
i do not take it up
when comes my chance to shine i reflect
and i do not speak up

it's not that i can't bear to tell you
i would if i had to
it's not what i don't dare to go through
i would but not for you
it's not that i don't care i would too
just show me one who's true

you can't see what's in me but don't think
there's not much to be seen
it's true i often find that things stink
don't think that i am mean
say won't you help me out if i sink
i can't control this spleen

though most days are stormy there's color
complementing the grey
though inside me it's mostly pallor
some hues allay dismay
for a break in the clouds my candor
i sometimes do betray

when i guess i am odd i don't know
i'm at odds with myself
when i suppose i'm wrong i don't know
i am wronging myself
when i think i'm unloved i don't know
i'm not loving myself

every day i carry my burden
out of these abysses
and i find as anguish does lessen
the more fortune kisses
still inside it is no rose garden
i make no promises
Multilethalead (Octoccata part 8)tag:www.worldviewzmedia.net,2010-10-08:2098065:BlogPost:406882010-10-08T20:15:05.000ZChristopher Stewarthttp://www.worldviewzmedia.net/profile/ChristopherStewart

The eighth and final movement of « Octoccata » is entitled « Multilethalead » and starts on a ostinato-based progression that slowly morphs into a relentless string of offbeat melodies harmonized by an increasing number of voices, building up to a climactic reprise of the « Lethal Lead » theme introduced in the fourth movement.

The « Multi » part of the section's title comes from the markers identifying some of its passages, namely « Trilead, » « Quadlead, » and « Pentapercular, » that latter tag signaling the moment when the percussions forego their timekeeping role in order to join the other instruments in the joyous fun of underpinning the melody.

Once the percussive instrument concludes its opening statement, the music returns to more traditional orchestrations as it explores a succession of quirky melodies supported by syncopated rhythms.

The section culminates on a repeated phrase wherein the main riff is a restatement of a previous figure which is now being played in reverse time, producing a most suspenseful effect.

After having been exposed to much verbal virtuosity, chances are that by now you are totally convinced that it is indeed necessary to keep at least a few bottles of O·c·t·a·T·o·n·i·c handy, just in case some random ailment should hit without warning. But as you accept this much to be true, your always watchful critical sense remains on its guard and wonders how it might be possible for something to be this good. Surely, it mumbles to itself, there must be negative aspects to it. Well, guess what ? Not only aren't there any, but our commendable communicator knew that this line of objections was coming, and as always he is one step ahead of everybody...

No sicknesses does it omit
It brings you to your normal state

How on Earth can a musical movement be named « Progigoriation » you ask ? Well, obviously, because it's the prog rock variation of another similar movement entitled « Igorchestral » I emphatically reply. And so it is that the music of this sixth movement of « Octoccata » is closely related to that of the aforementioned second movement, with the noticeable difference that it is orchestrated for a 5-piece rock band comprising of drums, bass, guitar, organ, and synth.

After a transition reminiscent of « Nothing To Lose » from UK's « Danger Money, » the music moves into a passage featuring contrasting lines that ascend and descend in alternation, thus making the partition (particularly the « Piano Roll » view in SONAR, the MIDI sequencing software I use) look like a biorhythm chart.

« Igorchestral, » the second movement of « Octoccata, » has been thus named because of the inspiration for the music, and the selected arrangement.

Igor Stravinsky is indubitably one of the composers I admire the most. The music he composed for the ballet « The Firebird » stands at the top of my list of favorites. One day while dabbling on the keyboards back in April 1999, I came across a figure somewhat reminiscent of the beginning of « The Augurs of Spring: Dances of the Young Girls, » the second scene of the Russian composer's « The Rite of Spring. » I sequenced it on the spot, and although I listened to it on several occasions, I never touched it again until many years later when time came to attack the writing of the present suite. That original sequence eventually spawned the music that is featured today.

The movement stands out as another orchestral piece specifically arranged for what I dub the « Modern Poligrafic Ensemble, » referring to the band when « exotic » instruments such as clarinet, brass, and orchestral percussions are called in to play.

Meanwhile, the sales representative of the good Doctor Graf continues to deliver his pitch in the hopes of liquidating countless crates of bottles of O·c·t·a·T·o·n·i·c, that most talked-about of formulae :

« Octoccata » is an instrumental suite clocking in at a little over 16 minutes. The title comes from the combination of octatonic and toccata, and is inspired by Emerson, Lake & Palmer‘s adaptation of the fourth movement of Alberto Ginastera‘s first piano concerto, which they published on their « Brain Salad Surgery » album under the title « Toccata. »

The intent here is simply to « make some noise. » In other words, the music is meant to be spectacular and bombastic, and hopefully the intensive use of octatonic scales will warrant some originality to the whole and contribute to convey an overall feeling of amazement to the listener, but contrary to most pieces of Poligraf's repertoire, there is no narrative around which the music has been assembled.

From the title came the idea of loosely turning the piece into a « symphony of eights, » so the suite comprises eight movements, named as follows :

octoverture

igorchestral

vibrastinato

biorhythalead

reoctoverture

progigoriation

marimbastinato

multilethalead

The composition opens with « Octoverture » which is basically a series of variations built around a recurring motif and over which the instrumentalists take the lead role in various combinations. The whole section is not in 8/8 but in 7/4, not to provide the exception that breaks the rule, but simply because that's how the motif came out, and it sounded good as such.

While the music wasn't built around it, a narrative finally came into existence when I considered how to best present the piece. From the word « octatonic » stood out the word « tonic, » and that became the seed from which stemmed the idea of O·c·t·a·T·o·n·i·c, the miracle remedy to all ailments, infused with a touch of octatonine, and carefully brewed by a certain doctor Paul E. Graf, no doubt a good person enjoying an enviable reputation among his scientist peers, or maybe not...

The third part of « Juggernaut, » entitled « Procession, » evokes the arrival of the juggernaut before it unleashes into a frenzy of steamrolling.

The title and music of this section are both inspired by the origin of the word. From Wikipedia :

One of the most famous of Indian temples is the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Orissa, which has the Ratha Yatra ("chariot procession"), an annual procession of chariots carrying the murtis (statues) of Jagannâth (Krishna), Subhadra and Baladeva (Krishna's elder brother). A popular 14th-century work The Travels of Sir John Mandeville apocryphally describes Hindus, as a religious sacrifice, casting themselves under the wheels of these huge chariots and being crushed to death. Based on this claim, British colonials promulgated the claim that Hindu devotees of Krishna were "lunatic fanatics who threw themselves under the wheels of these chariots in order to attain salvation".

-----

In rare instances in the festival's past, people had been crushed accidentally as the massive 45-foot-tall, multi-ton chariot slipped out of control, with others suffering injury in the resulting stampedes. This sight led the Britons of the time to contrive the word "juggernaut" to refer to examples of unstoppable, crushing forces.

In the storyline of the suite, the third section corresponds to the entrance of the team of workers led by the not-totally-honest designer. At first, the spectacle is orderly and even admirable, but as questionable deeds are committed by both camps, relationships degrade and things go awry.

To illustrate this musically, I've tried to come up with something that evokes the ceremonial and majestic grandeur of the original chariot procession which suddenly escapes control before turning into to the catastrophic crush of the stampede that reaches its climax in « Steamroller. »

The Mechanics Of Karmatag:www.worldviewzmedia.net,2010-09-22:2098065:BlogPost:399812010-09-22T17:00:00.000ZChristopher Stewarthttp://www.worldviewzmedia.net/profile/ChristopherStewart

In « Surface, » the sixth chapter of « The Dam, » the protagonist/narrator is gradually returning to activity after having transformed into who he feels like being, and will ultimately reach the surface where he will properly begin his new existence.

In the storyline, this step marks the end of a long process of metamorphosis wherein one has endured many transformations and shed that which belongs to their former way of being. Once released from the demanding transition period of the immersion, they are free to emerge and revel once again, safe in the knowledge that a necessary rite of passage is now behind them, and that they have reached the beginning of an inspiring new phase of their life.

This wasn’t intentional from the outset, but the first part of this instrumental chapter turned out to sound quite a bit Pink Floydy. Not that I'm complaining or anything...

Today’s music does not comes from Poligraf’s catalogue as such. Rather, it is a piece for solo guitar that I intend to publish on an album of about ten acoustic compositions, all arranged for classical guitar, either playing solo or accompanied by other acoustic instruments.

The original title of this piece was « Maybe Later, » but I never liked it that much because of the element of doubt and uncertainty that it conveys, which doesn’t fit the music. I reworked some parts while getting ready to record the present demo, and along with the changes came the new and more appropriate title, « Sooner Or Later. »

While the first half of the piece starts in a reflective mood that leads into a peaceful passage, the second half remains upbeat and playful until the tongue-in-cheeky coda.

The fifth section of « Juggernaut » is entitled « Resilience, » which is defined as :

The physical property of a material that can return to its original shape or position after deformation that does not exceed its elastic limit.

An occurrence of rebounding or springing back.

In the storyline of the suite, the section portrays the situation after the traumatic experience, the metanoia, as the protagonists are bouncing back from the onslaught of « Steamroller. »

The piece is almost a twin to the second part (« Heedlessness ») in as much as they share the same structure and meters, and the motifs and rhythms are similar, although different. And just as for the second part, the lyrics and vocal melodies are still embyonic works in progress at this point.

Rapids (The Dam part 3)tag:www.worldviewzmedia.net,2010-09-10:2098065:BlogPost:395412010-09-10T00:32:52.000ZChristopher Stewarthttp://www.worldviewzmedia.net/profile/ChristopherStewart

In « Rapids, » the third part of « The Dam, » the protagonist/narrator is being carried from a mostly uneventful and rather disappointing river straight into an heretofore unseen dam.

The intent behind this instrumental section is to convey a feeling of being taken ahead by an unrelenting force, and to let the listener reflect on the discourse presented in « River. »

In the storyline, the rapids represent the rising tension which accompanies the recognition that one's chosen course is not only increasingly unsatisfactory, but that the situation has evolved beyond the point of no return, and thus that a change of direction has become an unavoidable necessity. Our hero is being accelerated towards an ineluctable collision which is portrayed in the fourth section, entitled « Dam. »

« The Dam » is a 22-minute long suite in 8 movements that uses the metaphor of water flowing from source to ocean to illustrate the process that we affectionately refer to as life.

As the title suggest, the focus is directed on one major obstacle/life-changing experience, symbolized by a dam on the river, which the protagonist/narrator has to conquer in order to reach their intended destination.

The storyline is inspired by my own life and struggle to reach the goal of earning a living through my artistic output, as opposed to working a day job to support myself and invest what’s left of my energies in artistic pursuits on a part-time basis, as I’ve done for the most part of the last twelve years or so.
Come Backtag:www.worldviewzmedia.net,2010-09-07:2098065:BlogPost:394442010-09-07T23:40:37.000ZChristopher Stewarthttp://www.worldviewzmedia.net/profile/ChristopherStewart

« Come Back » dates back to the epoch of The Fall Children, the band that was supposed to be but never really was, and whose unexpected but timely demise cleared the space which Poligraf needed to come into being.

This is an enigmatic piece for me as both music and lyrics have been reworked and reorganized many times over the years, yet I’m never completely satisfied with the end results, which is kind of strange for a piece which is basically a simple song with an extended instrumental ending (as opposed to a lengthy suite for instance). That being said, as it stands now, I find the music convincing, except for the choruses which need an arrangement.

The song portrays the situation of a person hoping to reunite with a long-lost loved one, and I'm currently working on lyrics with a view of including the piece on Poligraf's third full-length album tentatively entitled « Zen and the Art of Navigating the Cosmos. » So, I'm trying to tell the story from the point of view of someone who uses their own feelings and visions along with traditional divinatory tools (such as astrology and tarot) in order to reach the desired future, pretty much as a pilot would use their instruments to reach their destination. Hopefully this new angle will provide enough inspiration to bring the piece to a satisfactory completion.

Here are parts of this work in progress :

Walking at night through the city
Miles away from your stare
Absorbed in memories of you
No distance I can't bear

My Evening Star for you I long
This love knows no delay
Dark of the moon, the feeling's strong
To be with you I pray

Still have this flame burning inside
Bright as the light of day
Lately the signs have multiplied
Hope tomorrow's the day

How time flew by, yet in hindsight
Few beats did not belong
My mind never figured I could
My heart knew all along

Stonecutter (revisited - with poetry)tag:www.worldviewzmedia.net,2010-09-06:2098065:BlogPost:394032010-09-06T21:53:18.000ZChristopher Stewarthttp://www.worldviewzmedia.net/profile/ChristopherStewart

« Stonecutter » is intended as an anthem to perseverance and is based on one of my favourite citations, one which has helped me on several occasions, the following quote by Jacob August Riis :

When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.

The main challenge of this composition was to have exactly 101 hits on the snare drum, with the 101st corresponding to the climax, the hammer hitting the rock one last time to split it in two.

The piece is an instrumental, to which I have written the following verses :

The central theme of « In Our Space » is the idea of building, of perhaps finding or reaching, a space where one is free to simply be themselves and do as they feel they should.

At the personal level, this corresponds to finding true purpose and staying in alignment with it, remaining centered at all times in that ideal sacred space, or pure land.

The second part of « In Our Space » is an instrumental entitled « A Space Where We Can Be » which comprises two movements.

The first movement is an energetic passage that is intended to convey a joyful and uplifting feeling, the enthusiasm that comes from being in that desired space.

The music then morphs into the second movement, a 6-voice fugue during which Christian will leave the drum stool to play the vibraphone while the bassist will have to handle both bass and bass pedals. The intent behind this section is to depicts one settling into their space after the initial discovery, and then moving into a consolidation and expansion phase.

In the audio clip included above, « A Space Where We Can Be » begins at 1:07.
Lepufology Master Classtag:www.worldviewzmedia.net,2010-09-02:2098065:BlogPost:392032010-09-02T18:17:57.000ZChristopher Stewarthttp://www.worldviewzmedia.net/profile/ChristopherStewart

The Lepufology Project is the story of Jack Babbitt, regarded as one of the world’s most trustworthy investigators of the paranormal, whose unfaltering curiosity for the mysterious leads on an international chase seeking bizarre rabbits of extra-terrestrial origin that finds its resolution in the tar sands deposits of Alberta.

The fifth and as of yet unwritten chapter is entitled « Lepufology Master Class : The Turnaround, » and is an account of the consequences of the success of the outworlders in their mission.

After the exploitation of petroleum and the use of its by-products have been forced to an unexpected end, at first the governments of many of the world high income economies openly admit that they don’t quite know how to react as the oil prices skyrocket, business activities slow down, and industrial production plummets. After much reflecting and debating, it becomes clear that the way forward involves rethinking and reorganizing the management of energy toward sustainability and renewability on a global scale, and restructuring the world economies in alignment with these values.

Unlike the other pieces composed for this project, « The Turnaround » is not intended as a soundtrack but rather as a rallying song, an anthem for progressives, activists, and anyone who is hoping to make this world a better place.

The lyrics have not been completed at this time. Here's what's publishable :

We are asking to live in a juster world
We are asking to live in a freer world
We are asking to live in a greener world
We are asking to live in a better world

We all deserve to live in a juster world
We all deserve to live in a freer world
We all deserve to live in a greener world
We all deserve to live in a better world

We are bound by the time
Earth isn't turning round
Inaction is a crime
One answer to be found
It's easy as the rhyme
We must turn things around
Do sing with us this time
I will turn things around !
Here comes the turnaround !
Derelict (revisited - with poetry)tag:www.worldviewzmedia.net,2010-09-01:2098065:BlogPost:391612010-09-01T19:46:13.000ZChristopher Stewarthttp://www.worldviewzmedia.net/profile/ChristopherStewart

« Derelict » is the fourth chapter of « Lifeforce » and is a completely instrumental section intended to evoke a dark, chaotic, threatening mood, and to suggest a painful descent.

In the storyline of the suite, the chapter depicts the period when things start to go awry. Inspiration is ignored or resisted and activity slowly subsides. The goal is put aside, only for a while, but long enough for doubt to invade the process and destabilize it.

The first part of the demo clip presents what is intended as an accompaniment for a guitar solo. The band's original lead guitarist (Louis Fiset) used to shine here with a very effective gut wrenching slide guitar solo that sadly very few people have had the privilege to hear thus far (but don't worry, I still have tapes...). The ending of the section used to feature a distorted guitar playing a funerary melody, which has evolved with time and is now harmonized and arranged for two clarinets and a trumpet.

Hoping it's not such a day of dereliction for you, here's the associated poetry :

Defeated
Unwilling to go through
This door of innovation
Not knowing the courage
For more transformation

Disjointed
Unwilling to believe
This voice of intuition
Not knowing the virtue
Of its revelation

Defensive
Unwilling to concede
These proofs of divination
Not knowing the release
Of exoneration

Depleted
Unwilling to receive
This gift of inspiration
Not knowing the reward
Of the culmination

Delinquent
Unwilling to honour
These walls of limitation
Not knowing the insight
That they are instruction

Degraded
Unwilling to resist
This sweet song of temptation
Not knowing the setback
Stemming from transgression

Deflated
Unwilling to elude
This pull of gravitation
Not knowing the lightness
Of high elevation

Derelict
Unwilling to go on
This road of liberation
Not knowing the distance
From here to completion

As I reread the verses, I am reminded of this quote by Carl Gustav Jung :

The foundation of all mental illness is the unwillingness to experience legitimate suffering.

The opening section of « The Dam » is entitled « Source. » I remember feeling uplifted and very satisfied with myself after writing the first draft back in September 1997, even though I only had a vague idea of the whole piece at the time. Given how the suite turned out and what it stands for, it is now easier for me to understand why.

The composition is an orchestral piece arranged for the « Modern Poligrafic Ensemble, » as I like to call our band when the parts I have written for Christian (our drummer) involve orchestral percussions. It slowly builds up and progressively hints at the main riff of the upcoming second section.

As I often do, I have written poetry to accompany this instrumental. Here's a first draft :

The Lepufology Project is the story of Jack Babbitt, regarded as one of the world’s most trustworthy investigators of the paranormal, whose unfaltering curiosity for the mysterious leads on an international chase seeking bizarre rabbits of extra-terrestrial origin that finds its resolution in the tar sands deposits of Alberta.

The fourth chapter of the series is entitled « Lepufology 401 : Responding To An Invasion. » Having accepted to collaborate with the outworlders, Jack flies back to Flatbush where he will have to guide a gigantic horde of alien rabbits to the tar sands fields of Athabasca.

Here's the storyline :

Jack is taken back to the shaft. He is surprised to see that the spacecraft is missing, and just as he turns to ask the interpreter she tells him that when he found the base in Flatbush, the team was almost ready to go ahead with the operation, and that the two outworlders who brought him over have returned to complete the preparations. While another spacecraft is conveyed onto the platform, she explains that they must act fast because they have enemies of their own who are trying to thwart their plans and who have recently tried to attack their farm in Flatbush with an airborne weapon which was countered at the last moment and redirected to crash near the border of the province. She gives him night-vision goggles, and a small communication device so that they can stay in contact should he have questions or run into unexpected situations.

Jack boards the vehicle and is told that its operation is mostly automated and that it will follow a preprogrammed route to Flatbush. He receives permission to lift off, pushes some controls, and the spacecraft slowly rises to the ground level and up over the field. As he flies away, he looks back and sees the platform closing the shaft and then taking the appearance of the surrounding land until it becomes undistinguishable. The vehicle picks up speed and Jack starts to reflect on the recent events as he gazes in awe at the sweeping landscape.

When he arrives in Flatbush, the spacecraft heads to the location of the remains of the crop circle, and hovers there. A few instants later, just as the interpreter had told him before leaving, Jack hears an alert-type sound and sees some lights flashing on his dashboard. Part of the ground lowers underneath him and a spiral-shaped ramp lifts up from the bottom of the shaft to the ground level. Moments later, rabbits start emerging from the ramp and advancing in the field.

Jack his astonished by the number of rabbits gathering below him. Yet the rabbits are just getting out of the shaft, and not moving out of the field. Jack doesn't quite know what to do and just as he grabs the communication device he hears the interpreter telling him that the rabbits are simply waiting for the vehicle to move, and that they will go wherever it goes. She adds that a route which the rabbits can follow has been preprogrammed, and that Jack is only there to make sure that everything works as planned.

At her instruction, Jack pushes some controls and the spacecraft rotates towards the nearest road. It starts flying at a slow speed and the rabbits begin to move in its direction. Once it arrives over the road, the speed increases, and the rabbits start to race behind it. Jack is amazed at the speed at which the animals can run. He smiles and sits back as the spacecraft leads the rabbits to the Athabasca tar sands.

As they move over the fields, the rabbits spread around and some of them start digging holes. Their number is astonishing and Jack has trouble believing what he sees. He his relieved as he witnesses the last rabbits arrive on location and disappear under the ground. He tells so to the interpreter who confirms that the Flatbush farm is now empty and that the two other hordes respectively targeting Peace River and Cold Lake have also reached their objective. She thanks him and concludes the communication by saying that he will be taken back to Flatbush where the spacecraft will land, and that his car has been fixed and is parked on the road next to the field.

Epilogue :

A few weeks later, news bulletins start emerging from many of the largest oil plants on the planet which are reporting production problems and as unexpected as inexplicable decreasing yields from proved reserves. Jack tries to find some news about the production in Alberta and learns that there are indeed reports of lowering production and never before observed decreases in the quality of the oil sands.

Soon after, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries announces production shutdowns and shortages, and are quickly followed by most of the other oil-producing countries. The governments of many of the world high income economies openly admit that they don't quite know how to react as the oil prices skyrocket, business activities slow down, and industrial production plummets.
Between Worlds (Epilogue)tag:www.worldviewzmedia.net,2010-08-27:2098065:BlogPost:389612010-08-27T20:16:04.000ZChristopher Stewarthttp://www.worldviewzmedia.net/profile/ChristopherStewart

I read the The Tibetan Book of the Dead twice. I started with a French translation, and then read the Robert A. F. Thurman version. My motivation at the time was to learn more about the death process and what comes after.

At the time, I was agreeably surprised to discover that the text, which is traditionally read to the dead and is intended to guide them through the experiences that the consciousness has during the interval between death and the next rebirth in order to help them attain liberation, was also very rich in knowledge that could be applied to my own life, for instance in terms of understanding my own inner workings.

Years later, I came to the realization that the text could also be interpreted as a metaphor for life, or more precisely, as a symbolized depiction of the process of moving from where one currently is to the next stage in their life. In that perspective, and in a way reminiscent of the death card in tarot, the death process can be seen as the transition from one's present self to one's future self, for instance in terms of changing careers, relocating, moving on to a new love relationship, or similar transformations, which are represented by transmigration and rebirth.

As hinted in the text through numerous mentions of not giving into fear, and recognizing post-death experiences as one's own mental projections, the quality of this rebirth is determined by the degree to which one is able to recognize the extent of their power, their very nature and their true purpose, and to shed the elements of the past that are not compatible with this recognition.

The audio clip above presents the finale of the whole suite. Below is an excerpt taken from the first ever live performance given by Poligraf, playing an early version of « Between Worlds » back in April 2002 :

The Lepufology Project is the story of Jack Babbitt, regarded as one of the world’s most trustworthy investigators of the paranormal, whose unfaltering curiosity for the mysterious leads on an international chase seeking bizarre rabbits of extra-terrestrial origin that finds its resolution in the tar sands deposits of Alberta.

The third chapter of the series is entitled « Lepufology 301 : Racing Spacecrafts. » This time, things get a little more complicated for Jack Babbitt as he gets abducted and taken into the alien headquarters in the Wiltshire, UK, where he discovers the purpose of the presence of intelligence from outer space on Earth.

Here's the storyline :

Jack is still driving, trying to escape from the rabbit farm in Flatbush. He looks in the rearview mirror and sees a small vehicle hovering in the distance behind him. Still terrified, he accelerates in the hopes of eluding it, but the spacecraft is gaining ground.

The airborne vehicle catches up with the car and manoeuvers so as to force Jack to leave the road and wreck his car in an empty field. He tries to get out of the car to run away, but two men get out of the spacecraft and grab him before he can get anywhere.

He is taken inside the spacecraft which quickly lifts up and starts to fly at great speed. The abductors remain silent to Jack's oppositions and questions, but he can see outside and reckon that they're heading east as the sun is setting behind them. He recognizes one of the men as one of the pair he bumped into earlier. As they fly over the Canadian territory, Jack begins to think that he's probably being taken to his kidnappers headquarters, and he gets his confirmation soon after as the vehicle first reaches the Atlantic ocean and then the coast of Ireland. A few minutes later, Jack recognizes the somewhat familiar landscape of England in the night-time.

Just as he had guessed, the spacecraft finally slows down as they approach the Wiltshire. It stops over Milk Hill, a place Jack knows particularly well for having investigated there a few years back. Much to his surprise, the vehicle lands at the exact location of one of the crop circles he had reported on.

He hears a deep rumbling sound and the spacecraft starts to go down. He imagines that they have landed on a platform of some sort that's being lowered into the ground. And indeed, a few seconds later they hit the bottom of a deep shaft and stop moving.

Jack is taken out of the vehicle and led to a meeting room where he is greeted by a woman who addresses him in English and introduces herself as an interpreter before presenting her colleagues.

One of them starts to speak, and Jack turns to the woman as she starts translating. She first tells him that they don't have much time on their hands so they will have to go straight to the point. Jack then learns that they are a team of beings of extra-terrestrial origin who have come to Earth to correct a situation threatening the equilibrium of the planet, and thus also endangering the balance of the solar system which in turn could have unfortunate consequences on their own planetary system. The woman explains that the exploitation of petroleum and the use of its by-products has proven consistently dangerous throughout the galaxy, and can have disastrous effects on a planet, as is now the case on Earth. She tells Jack of the harm it causes to the ecology, animals, birds, humans beings, the atmosphere, that the situation is critical and that something must be done soon or life on Earth as humans know it could disappear. The interpreter concludes by saying that their plan is to eliminate the major reserves of oil on the planet so as to slow down and eventually stop the damages, and oblige mankind to look for safer sources of energy.

Another woman speaks, and the outworlders start to leave the meeting room. The translator invites Jack to follow them. Just across the corridor, they enter a room which looks like a laboratory. Jack learns that the team has been sent here to bioengineer and breed vast quantities of super-rabbits with features that allow them to run extremely fast over many hundreds of kilometers, dig deep underground, see in the dark, devour hydrocarbons, digest them into unexploitable substances, and reproduce as needed until the reserves of petroleum on the planet are depleted. Once their task is completed, the underground rabbit colonies will disappear out of hunger. Jack is relieved by what he is being told and smiles as he makes sense of his recent findings.

A man turns toward Jack and addresses him. The interpreter asks Jack if the team can count on his collaboration, and he accepts wholeheartedly. He is then told that he badly injured one of the observers when he ran out of the rabbit farm in Alberta, and that he must take his place. The woman explains that the targets of the operation in Flatbush are the tar sands, and that his duty will be to see that the rabbits are released and led to the deposits of Athabasca.
